Belle and Beast dance in Beauty and the Beast (2017)
Hey, who started this anyway?...Walt Disney Pictures

4 Stars (Great)Why I Saw It: Press screening, and always curious to see how they handle Beast’s transformation at the end.
What I Thought: The animators became too caught up in what they could do vs. what they should do for the story or audience, and Emma Watson (while a practical casting choice for a host of reasons) often mistook boredom for frustration (the Disney version of Toni Collette’s recent misfire). Having said that, the modernization is marvelous – Josh Gad is on my Best Supporting Actor conversation list, and the film carries a lovely “Princess Charming” vibe, given that every time the plot moves forward, it’s likely due to Belle. Inclusive, insightful, enlightened, and a giant step in the right direction with regard to expressing kindness and rejecting its opposite.

Beauty and the Beast. Dir. Bill Condon. Perf. Emma Watson, Dan Stevens, Luke Evans, Josh Gad, Kevin Kline, Ewan McGregor, Ian McKellen, Emma Thompson, Stanley Tucci, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Audra McDonald, Nathan Mack, Hattie Morahan, Adrian Schiller. Walt Disney Pictures, 2017.

Modern iteration of the classic tale, in which a cursed prince must earn the love of another or be eternally doomed, and the young woman who falls into his life.
