5 StarsWhy I Saw It: For about five weeks running, my mother’s hairstylist would exclaim, “Have you seen it yet? Have you?? Call me immediately after you see it!” and remind me that he’d given her his home number specifically for that purpose.
What I Thought: I’m so glad he gave me “homework” ~ it’s dazzling of course, but I’ve seen a couple of Cirque productions (including Dralion live), but Worlds Away has something special, even by Cirque standards. (Update Feb 12 2015: Experienced Amaluna live last night, and it was truly magnificent. Head and shoulders my favorite, with the exception of the element below, which ranks right along with it. Make every effort to see it live, and we’ll talk more about it when the DVD becomes widely available.)

Cirque du Soleil: Worlds Away. Dir. Andrew Adamson. Perf. Erica Linz, Igor Zaripov, Lutz Halbhubner. Paramount Pictures, 2012.

A young woman and a circus aerialist become entranced and then separated, and search for each other after being swept into a dreamlike world.

Even though Cirque productions have a way of creeping me out deeply on some level, I’m so glad I hung in there, because the last number was something I’ll never forget. I’ve posted it below from Igor Zarapov’s channel (much there worth experiencing, !!). The combination of such strength, such artistry, and such courage by Linz and Zaripov, as well as the choreography and composition of the piece itself,  is quite simply astonishing.

I don’t think I’ll ever tire of watching this:

More? Here’s another beauty with Igor and Marina Zaripov. Arguably more athletic than romantic, but nonetheless, well, the definitive sense of “amazing”…
