Daniel Kaluuya stars in Get Out
Remember what Stellan Skarsgård said about being polite...Universal Pictures
5 Stars (Magnificent)Why I Saw It: Press screening, and after Sicario, curious for more from Daniel Kaluuya. He didn’t have much to do, but it was clear he had much to offer.
What I Thought: This kind of thriller lives or dies on its performances, and the cast does Jordan Peele proud indeed. Keener shows us a deliciously different angle, and Kaluuya fulfills the promise of Sicario and then some. Peele’s script is top notch; he has pitch perfect command of comic relief, and it was a moment of sheer delight when, now completely immersed in the moment, I found myself silently hollering, “Get out!” and then remembered it was the title – now that’s how a title is supposed to work. And as a directorial debut? Astonishing, right up there with Man of Tai Chi and Frailty. Shyamalan should be feeling afraid. Very afraid.

Get Out. Dir. Jordan Peele (also wrote). Perf. Daniel Kaluuya, Allison Williams, Catherine Keener, Bradley Whitford, LilRel Howery, Betty Gabriel, Marcus Henderson, Stephen Root, Caleb Landry Jones, Lakeith Stanfield. Universal Pictures, 2017.
