Evil
- Behavior that knowingly causes harm or injury (either to a group or to whomever happens to be in the space at the moment); by either individual or institution; often justified by being in service to some [perhaps so-called] higher purpose.
- The nature of an individual habitually and deliberately bringing harm to a target individual, over time and with consistency and in a form not obvious to others, for their own amusement, coupled with a willful obliviousness to the damage wrought and persona of high ideals and respectability maintained by incessant lying to self and others.1
That second one’s unnerving, isn’t it? Examples of the first tend to be obvious and what the world routinely points to as being evil, such as Derek Vinyard pre-enlightenment or Lord Voldemort. It can also ambush the complacent, who wake up and cry, “How did it come to this!?” The second is a predator hiding in plain sight, wreaking destruction without attribution ~ unless you’re the target, of course, and then the threat is often, though not necessarily, apparent (think Merteuil & Valmont or Ingrid Magnussen). Following are excellent illustrations of both types, never hurts to be informed, right? …

Back from a seriously scary health relapse in mid-October and returning to action. Kudos to my patient friends and colleagues, you're the best. New programs and more unrolling this year, here's to 2012!
