Prudence
- Caution in practical affairs; discretion or circumspection.
I heard an exchange on TV when I was in my teens: “Is this wise?” “If you have to ask the question, probably not.” Vindication! I’m famous for being square, but the accurate term Prudent, thank you very much. :) When starting the negligence section of Torts 1, Prof W described the first part of the test: “What bad can happen, and if it happens, how bad it is gonna be?” An approach eminently useful even in mild everyday form. Prudence isn’t about being timid, a follower, or unwilling to risk. Rather, it’s about counting the cost before taking action and deciding whether or not a logically possible consequence is worth it compared to the payoff. If it is, then by all means proceed.
