Adam Driver and Andrew Garfield in Silence
That's how I looked at the endParamount Pictures
3 Stars (Time Well Spent)Why I Saw It: Press screening, and love Driver and Garfield (maybe even a Qualifying Role for Driver? Hmm….)
What I Thought: Ponderous and ultimately emotionally neutral. Not so good. Scorsese of course creates a sumptuous piece of filmmaking, but he makes the points three and four and five times over, making the exceptional length presumptuous. Additionally, despite posing several compelling questions, he never gives it a stand of its own, even if simply to say, “Decide for yourself.” Excellent performances, however, and I’ll sign up for more from Issei Ogata anytime.

Silence. Dir. Martin Scorsese. Perf. Andrew Garfield, Adam Driver, Issei Ogata, Liam Neeson, Yôsuke Kubozuka, Ciarán Hinds. Paramount Pictures, 2016.
