The Martian

Desert IslandWhy I Saw It: Adore a sci-fi action thriller, the cast is packed with favorites, and praying for vintage Scott.
What I Thought: Great for the mind, great for the heart, and Ridley Scott at the top of his game. Unequivocally unmissable.

The Martian. Dir. Ridley Scott. Perf. Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Jeff Daniels, Kristen Wiig, Sean Bean, Michael Peña, Kate Mara, Aksel Hennie, Sebastian Stan, Donald Glover, Mackenzie Davis. Twentieth Century Fox, 2015.

Apparently killed by a ferocious storm during an emergency evacuation, astronaut Mark Watney’s crew is forced to leave him behind – leaving him to rely on his ingenuity to signal Earth and find a way to stay alive.
Simply spectacular on every possible level (hello springtime). Watney says he’ll have to “science the shit out of this,” and science the shit out of it he does; this could be the one that gets every kid in America jazzed about STEM, and shows what brains can do when not busy obsessing over what the Kardashians just did.

Pragmatic yet compassionate, upbeat yet suspenseful, and serious yet friendly, The Martian is exciting, surprising, visually sumptuous, and filled with genuine, life-sustaining Humor (vs. its currently ubiquitous cousin – the jaded, haughty, and/or vaguely hopeless Irony). Get the family in front of this one on the biggest screen you can manage, and if it’s Grownups Movie Day, pair it with Sicario first.
